The nose of the 2006 Dorsheimer Pittermanchen Auslese testifies just as indubitably to slate as to botrytis. Honey, coconut, vanilla, licorice, Chartreuse-like herbal-floral essences, and sheer stone lead to a liqueur-like, honeyed, viscous yet light and slate-tinged palate and a finish that really clings. This as yet embryonic, Erden-like elixir should be enjoyed between ages 10-25.
Armin and his daughter Caroline Diel and an expanded crew brought in their entire 2006 crop in two weeks – less than half the normal time. As at so many addresses, yields were low in consequence of selectivity. This is a very fine vintage at Schlossgut Diel, even if not (as its predecessor was) a great one.
