The 1995 Zinfandel Old Vines may turn out to be outstanding, but at present, it is controversial because of the wine's overwhelming woodiness. It exhibits an opaque black/purple color, followed by an exotic nose dominated by raw wood. With breathing, some coconut and black-cherry fruit scents emerge. Dense, full-bodied, and exceptionally rich, but excessively toasty, this wine will benefit from another 6-12 months of bottle age. If the wood becomes more integrated, this will be an outstanding example of a blockbuster, hugely concentrated, massively thick Zinfandel that is atypical of the 1995 vintage. This massive wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
