The 2006 Nebbiolo d’Alba is made from Monforte and Barolo fruit. It sees malolactic fermentation in steel and subsequent aging in French oak. The tannins come across as a little rustic, which is normal for Nebbiolo at this price point. Still, this is a pretty, fruit-driven Nebbiolo to drink over the next few years, preferably at the dinner table, where the wine is likely to offer its greatest pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.
The biggest news at Damilano is the family’s recent acquisition of eight hectares of vineyards in the prestigious Cannubi vineyard through a long-term lease. In the past I have not been too terribly impressed with overall quality here, but hopefully the Cannubi transaction will be an inflection point for the estate. Access to a historic site isn’t just a business opportunity, it is also an enormous privilege and responsibility. Today I have my doubts as to whether Damilano will be able to make the most of their holdings in Cannubi but nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong.
