Here's a throwback wine from a vintage from long ago. The 2001 Rosso del Soprano shows the indigenous characteristics of the grapes that make up this blend. Overlooking the Straights of Messina, these vineyards offer fruit that is pungent and prickly with notes of wild berry, wet forest floor, black truffle and resin. The ensemble is offbeat and unique. That natural thorniness distinguishes this wine, and makes it appropriate to pair with the hearty meat-based dishes of inland Sicily. The tightness of the tannins and the fresh acidity would pair with fatty sausage or pork. There is a rustic or wild side to this wine that makes it interesting. Now, some 15 years after the vintage, this Rosso del Soprano is surprisingly fresh and youthful. It shows some signs of evolution and aging, but not as much as you may expect. In fact, it is drinking perfectly at this moment.
