One of the most fascinating red wines I have ever tasted from the Loire, in particular this appellation, is Olga Raffault's 1964 Chinon Les Picasses, which comes from a good vintage that was very warm and delivered grapes with relatively low acidity. Dressed in a beautiful ruby-garnet robe, the wine reveals an open, wide and generous, intense, sweet and floral-scented bouquet of ripe, red fruits. Silky, sweet and again generous and wide on the palate, this is a spectacular, refined and vivacious Chinon with a silky texture, great elegance and tension. The wine gets very intense on the palate and in particular on the finish, which is endlessly long. An absolutely amazing experience. Tasted with Bertrand Sourdais at Domaine de Pallus.
