Readers looking for a terrific, massive 100% Syrah made from low yields and bottled unfiltered should check out Alain Parent's 1997 St.-Joseph "420 Nuits". Made from 15-year old Syrah vines, and aged in 100% new demi-muids, it is sensationally extracted and rich, with super-intense aromas of wood smoke, cassis, pepper, and a touch of dried tomatoes. Full-bodied, and beautifully pure and rich, with the oak playing a subtle role, this large-scaled St.-Joseph should provide gorgeous drinking early (because of its low acidity and evolved style), but keep for 10-12 years.
