Martinenga is one of the most storied vineyards in Barbaresco. Even if Marchesi di Gresy bottles the fruit from its two best sub-plots, Gaiun and Camp Gros (to be released next year) separately, I have to admit being somewhat disappointed by the 2004 Barbaresco Martinenga. It is a pleasant, medium-bodied wine with strawberries, raspberries, flowers and spices, but it lacks the sweetness, concentration and length to be an outstanding Barbaresco. It comes across as somewhat lean and diluted in character, a shame for a vintage of this pedigree, in which the estate could have and should have produced a more important and distinctive Barbaresco.
