I have been impressed with the wines from this estate, now represented in the United States. The reds are special cuvees bottled unfiltered for the American importer, and thus are different from those wines sold elsewhere in the world. I tasted the filtered 1994 St.-Joseph available for most of the world side by side with the unfiltered 1994 St.-Joseph purchased by Peter Weygandt. The difference in score was about ten points, with the filtered cuvee lean, tart, stripped in the middle, with no real texture, and dull aromatics. In total contrast, the unfiltered American cuvee exhibits a deeper ruby/purple color, more expansive, sweet, black-cherry fruitiness, medium body, good underlying acidity, and an elegant, long, spicy finish. It is amazing, as well as sad, that after eighteen years of writing about the differences between excessively fined and/or filtered wines and those that are bottled with minimal processing, I still seem to be a lone voice - in the correct lane, but going against the flow of traffic. Isn't it about time those so-called experts who remain conspicuously silent on this issue be held accountable?
