The powerful 1998 Viognier (14.7% alcohol) exhibits a soaring nose of honeysuckle and jammy peach scents. Nicely-textured, full-bodied, and fleshy, this low acid, plump wine should be drunk over the next year. Winemaker/proprietor Steve Edmunds co-fermented a tiny dollop of Viognier with Syrah from the El Dorado vineyard called Fenaughty, the first time this vineyard designation has appeared on an Edmunds St. John Syrah, but some fruit from this vineyard was used to create the 1992 and 1993 Grand Heritage Syrahs. This 4,000 case winery will expand production in 1999 to approximately 10,000 cases. This is good news for everyone who has been trying to find these hand-crafted products. One of my favorite artisanal California producers, Edmunds St. John continues to do tasty things with an assortment of varietals other than the wine world's favorite flavors - Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.Tel.
