Durieu's 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape appears to be an excellent wine. It possesses a deep ruby/garnet/purple color, a big, smoked meat, Asian spice, licorice, herb, and black fruit-scented nose, full body, excellent concentration, moderate tannin, and plenty of glycerin. This rustic but impressively endowed wine should be cellared for 1-3 years and drunk over the subsequent 10 years.
This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.
Paul Durieu has produced some very rich, concentrated Chateauneuf du Papes. I purchased and drank with great pleasure his 1983, and his 1986 remains one of the stars of what has turned out to be a so-so vintage for the southern Rhone Valley.
