The peppery 2017 Ad Libitum Maturana Tinta is sort of a Mediterranean Bordeaux, with the herbal and spicy notes of ripe fruit. It was produced with one of the first vineyards planted with the variety (21 years ago), which was only allowed in Rioja in 2009. If you have not yet heard, Maturana Tinta is Castets, a relative of Carmenere, which explains the aromatic profile. However, it handles well the green character that I find in too many examples from Rioja, coming through as ripe and balsamic without excess, with good freshness and a fine palate. 6,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2018.
