Proprietor Juan Carlos Sancha talks about 2012 being the best vintage in the last 30 years in the small zone of Ba?os de Río Tobía where he is. The 2012 Ad Libitum Maturana is surely unusual. The nose reminds me more of a cool vintage in the Northern Rh?ne with its raspberry leaf aromas and smoky bacon than the pungent herbal notes of a Chilean Carmenère of which the Maturana Tinta is a relative. Perhaps the ripeness was full that year, and the medium-bodied palate shows a remarkable absence of vegetal flavors, it's austere, linear, with fine-grained tannins and very good acidity. It will be fascinating to see how this wine ages. 17,500 bottles.
