The most tannic and backward of these wines is the 2009 Ma Verite, which is an Haut Medoc made from 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. With loads of structure, size and power, this wine displays hints of bay leaf, earth crushed rock, black currants and cedar. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 12-15 years. This is a joint project between Pape Clement’s proprietor and empire builder Bernard Magrez and the famous French actor Gerard Depardieu. These cuvees generally represent between 500 and 1,000 cases and are certainly at the top of the pyramid of quality, given their rather humble appellations by and large.
