The Carillons consistently craft one of the finest Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachets. Only 580 bottles of the outstanding 1997 were produced (average production is usually 600 to 750 bottles). This talcum powder, tropical fruit, stone, and chalk-scented beauty has admirable richness and balance. It is tightly wound and austere, yet powerful, packed with dense layers of minerals and faint hints of candied lemons that linger throughout its extensive finish. I was blown away by its combination of precision and super-ripe qualities. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2006+. Incidentally, I was served a bottle of the 1996 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet (rated 96) at a tasting in mid-1998 and believe it to be the finest wine from this vineyard I have ever put to my lips. Sadly, I was told that only two cases came to the United States.
