The single vineyards 2011 Arrocal ángel is an homage to a member of the family obviously called ángel, and it's produced with a 71 year old Tempranillo vineyard in the village of Gumiel del Mercado. The year was warm and ripe, and the fruit is black rather than red, and after 20 months in oak, a patina of sweet spices and smoky aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, fresher than what I expected. 3,000 bottles.

Coffee, sanguine and licorice notes frame a core of plum and mineral notes in this firm, focused red. Features a lean texture, supported by firm tannins, but stays lively thanks to fresh acidity. (made from 70-year-old vines, with malo and 20 months of aging in new French oak barriques): Opaque ruby. Powerful, oak-spiced aromas of ripe cherry and red berries, cola and vanilla bean, with a sexy floral nuance building in the glass. Round and appealingly sweet, offering raspberry liqueur and floral pastille flavors, with intense Asian spice and mocha qualities coming up with aeration. Clings with impressive fruit-driven tenacity on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and lingering red fruit and allspice flourishes. I'd give this sexy wine at least another five years of cellaring but wouldn't fault anyone for getting into it now, for its exuberant fruit and spiciness.
