The Jayer-Gilles 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Damodes again displays an aromatic and gustatory diversity of ripe black fruits, tight concentration but plenty of freshness and vigor. The dark side of the vintage (notwithstanding bright acids) is illustrated by almost bitterly-concentrated herbal essence and fruit skins, roasted meats, smoked, toasted nuts, pungent brown spices, and wet stones. This is amazingly unevolved but amazingly long ... and those last two words might describe the time that must elapse before it becomes really drinkable. I’d plan to check in on it again in 4-5 years.
