One of Robert Jayer's great wines from the 1987 vintage is his sensational Nuits St.-Georges Les Damodes. The Les Damodes 1987 has explosive richness and a profound, concentrated, broad palate that oozes with aromas of black fruits, flowers, and exotic spices. The wine is approachable now, but will easily last for up to a decade. In texture and character, it reminded me of some of the wines of the brilliant Vosne-Romanee winemaker, Henri Jayer, from another branch of the Jayer family.
Unfortunately, only two barrels (or 50 cases) of this wine were produced. Much of it is allocated to one of Jayer's most fervent admirers, the superb restaurateur in Paris, Jean-Claude Vrinat, owner of the Taillevent restaurant.
I have heard complaints that Robert Jayer charges too much money for some of his wines. This may be true, but he has very few peers in Burgundy.
