When presenting the 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet Grandes Ruchottes, Alexandre Moreau all but apologized for not having a grand cru to propose, yet his wine can put to shame many of Burgundy’s offerings from more hallowed terroirs. Honeyed minerals, spices, and gravel can be found in this complex effort’s aromatics. Medium-bodied, fleshy, and rich, it pops onto the palate with waves of syrupy minerals, pears, and apples whose flavors linger in its impressively long finish. It is rich, admirably pure, and packed with flavor. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
