Chalone's 1991 Chardonnay Estate has performed differently on three separate occasions, ranging from nearly outstanding to unquestionably top-flight. It appears to be tighter because it is more unevolved than the more obvious and seemingly more flamboyant 1990. The last two tastings of the 1991 revealed a rich wine, with great fruit and ripeness, plenty of toasty new oak, and a decade of aging potential.
