This big red draws you in with flavors of coffee, plum, blackberry and tobacco, then turns powerful on the palate, with muscular tannins and plenty of extract. Saturated ruby. Reduced, musky aromas of raspberry, currant, mocha, menthol and game. Chewy and ripe, with excellent structure and acidity but less sheer density than the '98. Intensely flavored but not yet expressive. The tannins here come across as chewier and a bit tougher as there's not quite as much buffering extract as in the amazing '98. But this should be strong.
