As was stated in a number of cellars concerning the 2001s, the Lecheneaut brothers reported that some of their wines enjoyed exceptionally long malo-lactic fermentations. Typically, it is these cuvees that performed best. Such was the case for the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Vosne-Romanee, far and away the best “village” offering of the estate in this difficult vintage. Violets, cherries, and blueberries are found in the nose of this well-concentrated, silky-textured wine. Boasting excellent depth of fruit, a thick, lush personality, and a long, fruit-filled finish, it is mind-boggling to realize it was produced by the same men, in the same vintage, as the lean and hard Nuits-St.-Georges from the neighboring village. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. The Lecheneaut brothers, Philippe and Vincent, have a distinct preference for the 2000s over the 2001s. According to them, “the acidity levels are higher in 2001 and the tannins had trouble ripening whereas in 2000 we had superb ripeness.”Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel.
