A small estate in the warm southern part of the Marches, Oasi degli Angeli produces one sole wine, a no expense spared version of Montepulciano. Yields are tiny (5500 bottles from over twelve acres of vineyards) and the wine matures in all-new oak barrels and is then racked into another new oak barrel to complete its aging. An inky ruby in color, the 2001 Kurni is impressive on the nose with ultra-ripe, jammy red fruit aromas mingled with roasted coffee and tar. Voluptuous on the palate, with a lush, deep-pile texture and a sweetness which is almost decadent, its length and depth are equally significant. Unquestionably flamboyant, and for some rather over the top, but I confess that I find the wine irresistible. Drink: 2005-2018.
