The largest production cuvee (1,000 cases), the 2005 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is one of the few Tensley wines that sees any new oak (20%). Its opaque purple color is followed by notes of beef blood, tar, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, and acacia flowers. It is a full-bodied, dense, rich, impressively endowed effort which, like its siblings, needs several years of bottle age, and should age nicely for 12 or more years.
I tasted through a number of the 2006 single vineyard cuvees, and they all looked slightly lighter, but very fruit-forward. They will probably be more charming in their youth, without the weight, density, and structure of the 2005s.
