The 2009 Clos Gebrat Crianza is a blend of Garnacha, Carinena and Cabernet Sauvignon almost in equal measure, aged in second-fill French oak. It has a fresh, well-defined bouquet of ripe black cherries, liquorice and cassis that is very appealing. The palate is full-bodied with saturated tannins, struck through with crisp acidity that lends it balance and freshness. The finish displays good weight with notes of dark plum, liquorice and a touch of balsamic. This is a very well-made Priorat. Drink 2013-2020+ Vinicola del Priorat was established in 1991, the amalgamation of the production of several small co-operatives whose vineyards are based in four villages: Gratallops, El Lloar, La Vilella Alta and La Villela Baixa. They presently have 125 members who own 310 parcels of land totaling 205-hectares. I thought these were decent, well-priced wines that offer an affordable introduction to Priorat. It is made in an easy-going style with ample spicy red and black fruits that deliver immediate enjoyment. It is a good value in Priorat for drinking over the next 4-5 years. Vinicola del Priorat is a cooperative with 45 growers that produces 18,000 cases annually at an exceptionally high level of quality.
