A brilliant effort, the dense ruby/purple-colored 2001 Vina Pedrosa Reserva reveals notes of spicy new oak intermixed with lead pencil shavings, jammy black currants and cherries, smoke, licorice, and a hint of truffles. The sweet, opulent mid-palate exhibits plenty of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and toasty oak. This big, serious, well-endowed 2001 needs another 1-3 years to settle down. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.
