The 2003 Chianti Castelrotto adds 15% Merlot to the blend and is aged in small French oak barrels, of which 40% are new. It is a more powerful expression of Chianti, with generous dark red fruit, menthol and underbrush. Warm and ample on the palate, it reveals outstanding length on the palate and an irresistible personality. The tannins are a bit disjointed today, but some additional bottle age should help bring the wine into greater focus. It is another terrific effort from Giacomo Mori and is not to be missed.
