One of the most remarkable Syrahs I tasted from California is Carlisle's 1999 Syrah Sonoma. A riveting example of this varietal, it was aged in 100% French oak (60% new), but has soaked up the wood with remarkable ease. Akin to dry vintage port, it oozes with blackberry, blueberry, and creme de cassis characteristics, has an unctuous texture, magnificent concentration as well as purity, and an oversized yet impeccably balanced palate. The finishes lasts for nearly a minute. Sadly, there are only 123 cases of this amazing effort.
