Like Vinyes Domenech, Orto Vins has their own take on the old “hairy Grenache” or “Garnacha Peluda.” The 2009 Palell is a 100% Garnacha Peluda from 62-year-old vines in a single vineyard north of El Masroig. It has a fragrant, understated but complex bouquet that has a sense of life-affirming purity. There are subtle notes of strawberry, raspberry and wild hedgerow on the surface, but tangible minerality underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, fresh, strawberry and vanilla pod entry. It has crisp acidity and great definition, a wine that sashays to a fresh red cherry and wild strawberry finish, its spiciness only appearing belatedly on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2013-2020.
I had never heard of Orto Vins before I tasted through their range. I was impressed by both the consistency and by their pursuit of single varietal bottlings that might come at a price, but satisfy the curiosity of those who enjoy foraging for lesser known grapes. I thought their wines were extremely well-made and packaged.
