The blockbuster 1998 The Hat Trick (a 52% Shiraz, 42% Grenache, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon blend that produced 500 cases) is a prodigious effort. Opaque purple-colored, with an explosive nose of melted chocolate, pepper, blackberry jam, and cassis, this chewy, full-throttle, monster red reveals no hard edges. The integration of acidity, alcohol, and tannin have been easily accomplished, but the level of fruit extract is mind-boggling. This wine should drink well for 15-25 years, but who will have the patience to wait? Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; tel. (888) 472-5283
