While the 1995 Burton's Vineyard does not quite compete with the extraordinary old vine Grenache cuvees from Clarendon Hills, it is a noteworthy effort. Made from 50-80-year old Grenache vines blended with younger vine Shiraz, and aged in old American oak, it possesses a black/ruby color, as well as a stunningly intense nose of kirsch, black-raspberries, pepper, and a touch of prunes. The wine is dense, with terrific fruit intensity, spicy, smoky wood, and copious amounts of glycerin and alcohol in the lusty finish. Along with the wine's purity, large size, and gobs of fruit is a surprisingly vibrant acidity level. It should drink well for 5-8 years.
