A good value in Chardonnay, Calera’s 2004 Chardonnay Central Coast exhibits an evolved medium gold color in addition to attractive aromas of honeysuckle, pineapple, litchi, and exotic tropical fruits. Calera raised their price a buck over last year, though this is still a pretty good buy. It’s quite an acidic wine, in a day and age when so many Chards are meltingly soft, and while it’s not complex, it is dry and fruity, with a firm minerality supporting the Meyer lemon, nectarine and vanilla-rich oak flavors. ——S.H.(12/31/2006)—— 86
