One breathtaking red is the 1976 Gran Reserva Cartoixa, which is fresher and younger than the 1974 or 1975. It has aromas of Mediterranean herbs, beef blood, wet leaves and cherry fruit laced with a mineral, earthy undertone. The grapes used for this wine were about 50% from the high altitude, chalk-rich vineyards planted with Garnachas from the Masdeu, Santantoni or Artigots vineyards and about 50% other lower-altitude, slate vineyards with 10% Cari?ena. The palate is medium-bodied (there's no alcohol level on the label, but this is no more than 13-13.5%), balanced with some tannins and very good acidity in good harmony on the finish.
