This is the only outstanding 1992 wine I have tasted from central Italy. If Podere Poggio Scalette can do this well in a difficult vintage, it is inspiring to think what might be produced in a top year. The wine reveals a dark, saturated garnet color with purple tints. The sweet, ripe nose of roasted herbs, nuts, chocolate, and earthy, berry fruit is followed by a wine of sensational richness and opulence, expansive, sweet, ripe fruit, and a smooth, supple texture because of well-integrated acidity. Drink it now and over the next 7-8 years. Only 150 cases of this 100% Sangiovese (aged in 100% new French oak casks) were made.
