Andrea Cortonesi, the former cellarmaster at Mastrojanni, owns some very fine vineyards near Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The 2000 Rapace, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet, is a solid and fresh ruby color. Its black currant and blackberry aromas are joined by vanilla and cloves from the oak. Ample and voluminous, with fine berry fruit, rosemary, and sage, its firm tannins and fresh acidity indicate that the immediate pleasurability will be matched by some aging ability. Drink: 2004-2010.
