The 1988 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore exhibits a wonderful attractive, complex nose of new saddle leather, Asian spices, sweet red and black fruits, and cedar. Full-bodied, with velvety texture, and intense fruit that is beginning to mellow into a complex format, this rich, powerful Brunello can be drunk now or cellared for another 10-15 years. Impressive! Although Barbi fashioned some marvelous Brunellos throughout the sixties and early seventies, it has been a long time since I have tasted a Barbi Brunello as good as the three offerings reviewed in this issue.
