Last Tasted 5/92Of all the powerful 1978 Barolos, this offering is presently my favorite, having reached full maturity sooner than some of the more backward styles. It makes a persuasive case for both the Nebbiolo grape and the Barolo appellation. The huge, smoky, spicy, fruitcake-like nose also reveals subtle aromas of cedar, tobacco, and leather. In the mouth, this full-bodied wine is exceptionally rich, soft, and chewy. The finish boasts silky glycerin and high alcohol, the latter component nearly concealed behind lavish quantities of ripe fruit. This magnificent, multi-dimensional Barolo should continue to drink well for 8-10 years. The wine reveals considerable sediment, so decanting is advised.
