Unquestionably backward is the 1998 Barbaresco Vigna Brichet-Cotta. Its dark ruby color is followed by tightly-knit but promising aromatics of cherry liqueur, rose petals, melted asphalt, oak, and earth. Structured, powerful, broodingly backward, and extremely well-made, with moderate tannin, this impressive effort requires 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.
