The 2009 Merenzao (100%), an indigenous varietal also known as Maria Ordona or Bastardo, was nearly extinct until recovered by the winery. It was made with whole cluster fermentation and aged for 12 months in French oak. Aromas of cherry and raspberry soar from the glass leading to a racy, sweetly fruited, elegant wine which flows effortlessly across the silky-textured palate. Perhaps it will evolve but there is no compelling reason to delay gratification.
The Adega Algueira wines are made by none other than Raul Perez.
