Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Drouhin's 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves was a perplexing wine when I originally encountered it from barrel and awarded a question mark rather than a score. I am glad I did since it has evolved into a very fine Beaune Grève. It has a very composed, subtle and nuanced bouquet. While not as immediate as the example from Chateau de Meursault, there is a brooding intensity that I appreciate and the terroir begins to show through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. I admire the backbone of this Grèves, becoming more masculine and firm toward the finish without compromising its class. This has great potential. Tasted September 2017.
