The purple-colored 2003 Gran Reserva is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, and 10% Garnacha aged for 24 months in French and American oak followed by 3 years in bottle prior to release. It gives up a slightly roasted, reticent nose of damp earth, espresso, spice box, and assorted black fruits. On the palate it has ample ripe fruit leading to a slightly compact finish. It has enough structure to evolve for several years, but whether it has the requisite fruit is another question. Drink it over the next 5 years to be on the safe side.
