The unfiltered, opaque purple-colored 1998 Abadia Retuerta (65% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot) was aged for 16 months in both French and American oak (50% new). Although closed and tannic, it offers a promising nose of minerals, vanillin, and black currants. Powerful and full-bodied, with moderately high tannin as well as an austere finish, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. Kudos to Abadia Retuerta's terrific winemaker, Angel Anocibar.
Note: Abadia Retuerta's generic wine "Abadia Retuerta" was renamed "Seleccion Especial" in the middle of the 1998 vintage. Bottles were sold under both names.
