The quality of these wines over the last decade has been virtually flawless. The new releases are both from the good 1993 vintage. The dazzling 1993 Grosso Sanese Chianti Classico (formerly a Vino da Tavola) is made from 100% Sangiovese aged completely in small French oak casks. To quote a friend of mine (who has never been enthralled with Italian wines) after he tasted it blind, "This is one of your kick-ass wines." It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, an ostentatious set of aromatics (black-raspberries, cherries, sweet vanillin and toast), full body, and superb ripeness. The wine is round and opulent (much more so than either the 1985 or 1988), with outstanding richness, and a layered, expansive, chewy feel on the palate. Elegant and flattering to drink, I do not expect this wine to go through a closed or difficult stage; it should drink well over the next 7-10 years.
