Also impressive is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc that was aged in 40% new French oak for 20 months, its inky purple color is followed by a layers of black raspberry, charred toast, pencil shavings and tobacco on the nose. Ripe, fleshy and admirably textured, with solid tannic grip, it is full-bodied effort that has the texture to be approachable now yet should age effortlessly for 10-12 years. Drink now-2025.
Owned and run by long time Walla Walla Vintner Rick Small, with the wines made by Kevin Mott, this estate produces classic, elegant wines that have lots of oak, yet the fruit to handle it. In addition to the 2010s reviewed here, I was able to taste through a full lineup of 2012s, all of which showed well and in line with the reviews here. Due to the timing of my visit, I wasn’t able to get a look at the 2011s, and I’ll report on those this time next year.
