The tightly-knit, light golden-colored 1998 Chardonnay South River Vineyard comes from the Hanzell Chardonnay clone planted in an old riverbed. This offering reveals the same mineral characteristics as its siblings, but it needs more time in the bottle. Full-bodied, with a distinctive hazelnut character, a substantial, glycerin-imbued, full-bodied palate, and youthful, unevolved, smoky tropical fruit, and buttery flavors, it requires another year of bottle age, and should last for 4-5 years. The best chance of obtaining any of these wines is to get on the winery’s mailing list, or at least on the waiting list to get on the mailing list. Tel. (707) 433-2305; Fax (707) 433-2358.
