The 1997 Chardonnay South River Vineyard (14.2% alcohol) comes from a vineyard planted on an old riverbed, and is made from the Hanzell Chardonnay clone. It is a full-bodied, smoky, roasted nut-scented wine with plenty of honeyed pineapple and other tropical fruit flavors, huge quantities of glycerin, and a chewy, substantial, over-sized finish. This is not a Chardonnay for readers looking for light-bodied, restrained, subtle wines. Still young, and only hinting at its ultimate potential, it should be cellared for 1-2 years, and enjoyed over the following decade.Sadly, only about 250 cases of the gorgeous single-vineyard Chardonnays have been produced. They are fermented with whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, and aged in a high percentage of new French oak. Finally, they are bottled with no filtration. Moreover, my instincts suggest these wines will evolve for 3-4 years, and last for nearly a decade.Tel. (707) 433-2305; (707) 433-2358
