This wine takes us back 33 years in time to when the Soviets initiated their pullout of Afghanistan. With so much history passed since this Chianti Classico's bottling, it takes us on a fascinating journey. The 1988 Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi has yielded to age for the most part, but it still offers meaningful reflections on its Tuscan origins and on the proved longevity of Sangiovese. It opens to a pretty garnet color with red brick highlights and shows aromas of dried cherry, tilled earth and spicy tobacco. The wine's texture is soft and yielding, with noticeable fruit richness. The wine is aged but not fully faded.
