One of the most magnificent wines made in Chateauneuf du Pape, the 1961 Les Cedres was nearly as profound as the 1967. It is still in fine condition, although clearly on its last legs. The deep garnet color reveals considerable rust and amber at the edge. The wine possesses a sweet, cedary, fruitcake, smoky nose, and full body, but the immense thickness and richness have begun to fade. Although still powerful, alcoholic, and full-bodied, the 1961 is dropping its fruit. Don't push fate any longer. Last tasted 8/96.
