Chapoutier produced an astonishing 1990 Vin de Paille. Made from a microscopic 9 hectoliters per hectare, this wine (the grapes spend two and a half months on straw mats before they are crushed and vinified) is an unctuous, unbelievably rich, fabulously perfumed, honeyed wine with extraordinary balance for its massive size. Unfortunately, there were only 225 cases of this nectar. These wines can be expected to age for 40-50 years. Last tasted 4/94.
