The 1964 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru was served blind. At first, I felt it was a little fatigued on the nose, faded by time, with an odd dishwater scent that fortunately soon dissipated. In complete contrast, the palate is commendably fresh and energetic on the entry, well balanced with vestiges of red berries, tobacco and dried herbs, a Griotte that is correct rather than showy, which other 1964s can be. I was not as enamored with this Griotte as much as others, yet I did notice amelioration in the glass and after ten minutes, I began warming to its charms. It is a fine red 1964 Burgundy, but I would not put it up there on the mantelpiece of greats. Tasted December 2015.
