The 1987 Gran Reserva that I tasted was a magnum, which has a slower evolution and showed similar color and aromas to the 94, with a balsamic profile of dried herbs, noble woods, leather, tea leaves and cold bonfire over a core of red fruit. In the palate the fruit is fading and needs to be drunk soon. Drink now.
This classical name now belongs to the Osborne group from Jerez, and still represents the pure traditional Rioja style. Following the tradition of past times they still offer some older vintages once they have acquired more complexity and are ready to drink.
